Brother Spotlight: Callie Ng

Name: Callie Ng

Major: Communications | Business

Class: Upsilon, Winter 2012

Career Interest: Marketing and Public Relations

What drew you to Delta Sigma Pi and made you want to join?

I joined Delta Sigma Pi winter quarter of Freshman year. I wanted to establish myself the first quarter, learn more about business and try to get a head start on my career goals. I wanted to meet people who are equally driven and motivated.

What area(s) of business are you interested in/going into? Long term career goals (if applicable)?

As of now, I am interested in marketing and Public Relations. My goal is definitely to get into a marketing agency once I graduate, and when I gain enough experience, I would either like to open my own marketing agency or open my own cafe.

What is your favorite aspect of the Fraternity that not many people know about?

I think many people have the assumption that a Fraternity is all about having fun, but I think what makes our Fraternity different is that we really care about each other’s personal growth while also enjoying each other’s company. Something that the people in this Fraternity are really good at is at motivating each other to do better and helping each other get better. Everyone in this Fraternity is so driven, and it really makes me want to learn more and be a better version of myself everyday!

What were some unforseen benefits from being in the Fraternity?

To be completely honest, when I first pledged for Delta Sigma Pi, I was not sure what I was getting myself into. All I knew about Delta Sigma Pi was that it is a business Fraternity. However, during pledging, I began to learn so much about different business careers and I found myself leaning towards Marketing. Back then when I first got into UC-San Diego, I told myself I would major in Math and Econ joint because I wanted to be working in the financial field only. During pledging, I met so many different brothers in so many different career endeavors that I began to see myself in a different field -- in a field that I would be more happy in. I think that was definitely the biggest benefit I gained from pledging for Delta Sigma Pi -- learning about what I love and working towards that.

Whats you're favorite thing to do in SD/UCSD?

My favorite thing to do in San Diego is going to different places to eat. I think I’m a pretty big foodie, so whenever I get the chance to, I would be going out to eat. If I’m not trying out new places, I am probably at home learning new recipes.

Hobbies/Interests/Passions (unrelated to business)

FOOD! Lately, I have been trying to learn the art of beer. Since I am in San Diego, I need to take advantage of the different breweries here.

Whats your favorite memory in college so far?

This is a hard one since every little different memories shaped who I am, and they’re my favorite in some ways. If I have to choose, though, I think one of my favorite memories is talking to a brother in my car after a Delta Sigma Pi event to talk about our life goals and I was extremely inspired. Another favorite memory is my birthday weekend when a bunch of brothers gathered together to celebrate. All the things that happened that weekend are definitely unforgettable and we bonded more than ever.

What is the Fraternity like compared to what you thought it would be? Expectations vs. Reality?

I was not sure what to expect from a professional business Fraternity since all the stories I hear about Fraternities are that they always party. I guess I thought that a business Fraternity would just be people who are interested in business and similar to a club, but the brothers are actually pretty cool.
